Past Events

• Peace Alliance of the Lower Shore
  As part of the PALS observance of the 5th anniversary of the Iraq War (March 16, 2008) Ted Nunn spoke at Salisbury UUFS about the dop campaign and what the folks of District #1 can do to help. Since then, District #1 DOP supporters have been responsible for enlisting Rep. Wayne Gilchrest as the first Republican supporter of H.R. 808, and have initiated an endorsement from the local NAACP that has recently been ratified by the national NAACP!

• Takoma Park July 4 Parade
  On Wednesday July 4th, a contingent of 32 Maryland DOP supporters carried DOP banners and handed out materials along the parade route in Takoma Park. It was a family fun event for kids of all ages, and the Takoma Park community was very supportive! Mark your calendar for next year!

• Kids For Peace Camp
  June 16, Ellicott City
  A group of middle- and high-school peace activists were introduced to the DOP legislation, the national campaign and tips on lobbying elected officials in preparation for a visit with Mr. Sarbanes later this summer. Wish them well and stay tuned!

• Peace Wants a Piece of the Pie
  May 11, WDC and various district offices
  Part of the national action day sponsored by the Peace Alliance. DOPMD volunteers helped deliver "thank you" pies to the 65 current co-sponsors in DC while activists across the country visited offices of Reps and Senators in the various states. MD visits included Steny Hoyer, John Sarbanes, Chris Van Hollen, Ben Cardin, and Barbara Mikulski.

• Maryland United for Peace & Justice Conference
  April 28, 2007, 8am-5pm, Adelphi
  "If you want Peace, Work for Justice" - A full day of speakers and sessions exploring the theme. Ted Nunn  presented a workshop on "The Department of Peace Campaign and Grassroots Activism". Thanks to Joyce Lang and Susan Owen for helping staff the DOP table.

• DOP and NVC with the NSP
  March 25, 6:30pm, Columbia
  Discussion of the dop campaign and how Nonviolent Communication plays a key part. Sponsored by the MD Network of Spiritual Progressives. Thanks to Ruth Alice White for setting this up!

• MD Senate Peace & Nonviolence Task Force bill
  March 20, 2007, 1 pm Annapolis
  Testimony in support of MD Senate Bill #823 to create a peace and nonviolence task force in Maryland government. Update: The Judicial Proceedings committee gave the bill an unfavorable assessment, so it failed in committee for the 2007 session. Contact Joyce Lang for more information.

• Maryland Women's Expo
  March 10-11, 10am-5pm, Catonsville Community College
  DOP and Student Peace Alliance outreach opportunity.  Thanks to Marsha Lehman and Mary Hilton for staffing the table!

• MD House Peace & Nonviolence Task Force bill
  Feb 28, 2007, Annapolis
  Testimony in support of MD House Bill #902 to create a peace and nonviolence task force in Maryland government. Update: The Health and Government Operations committee gave the bill an unfavorable assessment, so it failed in committee for the 2007 session. Contact Joyce Lang for more information.

• DOP National Conference
  Feb 3-5, 2007, DC
  Featuring Deepok Chopra, Marianne Williamson, and many others.

• Peacemaking Conference
  Nov. 11, 2006, Baltimore
  A full day of speakers and sessions exploring  Peacemaking in the Home, Schools and Community, sponsored by Stony Run Friends.

• Camp Democracy
  Sept 5 - 21, The Mall, DC
  The VA dop campaign team led the effort to maintain a table at this event. Thanks to Tom Pratt and his team in VA for making this happen.

• Red Hot Chili Peppers
  Sept 23, Pimlico Race Track, B'more
  The RHCPs are supporting the dop campaign by giving us space on their concert tour to educate concert goers. The Pimlico event was a blast! Thanks to Susan Owen for coordinating the effort and to all of the volunteers who helped make this a successful event! (Check out the photos.)

Highlights

• Veterans for Peace Convention
  College Park, August 6-8, 2009
  The MD DOP campaign will have a table at the VFP convention in College Park on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We need volunteers to help staff the table in morning or afternoon shifts during those three days, so please contact Ted Nunn if you're interested in joining the rest of the DOPMD team at the convention.
