Maryland Campaign for a

U.S. Department of Peace & NonViolence

Maryland's DOP Champions

We are fortunate in Maryland to have two of our Congressional Representatives already co-sponsoring H.R. 808, the current House legislation to establish a cabinet-level U.S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence.

Rep. Albert WynnRep. Albert Wynn, from MD District #4, signed on to co-sponsored the House bill in Sept. 2005. The MD DOPNV campaign team in District #4 is actively led by Joyce Lang from Cheverly. Our focus in the 2006 Congressional session was to encourage Rep. Wynn to become a more vocal advocate for passage of the DOPNV legislation. As a result of that effort, Mr. Wynn came to the 2007 DOP conference in Arlington, VA, and spoke passionately to the assembled crowd about why this legislation is so urgently needed. (See his speech on YouTube!) Sadly, though, Mr. Wynn was unseated in the February 2008 Democratic primary. It's not too soon to start lobbying the future Rep. Donna Edwards!

From MD District #7 comes Rep. Elijah Cummings, who also co-sponsored the House bill when it was re-introduced in Sept. 2005. Rep. Cummings is a long-time supporter of the DOP legislation. Mr. Cummings again signed on as an initial co-sponsor when the bill was re-introduced on February 5, 2007. The MD DOPNV campaign in District #7 is currently looking for someone to step into the leadership role. (Contact MD DOP State Coordinator Ted Nunn if you live in the district and are interested in the position.)

If you live in either Rep. Wynn's or Rep. Cummings' district, please send them an e-mail, postcard, fax or phone message to congratulate them on their recent electoral success, thank them for their continuing support of the DOP legislation and encourage them to influence their House colleagues to also support the bill. (See the Contacts section for contact info.)
